Media Nomads
Why Does Your Message Belong in More than One Medium?
Interdisciplinary artists, disembedded from the frameworks of a single medium, combining more than one medium, may be in a position of heightened awareness with regard to the issues of content and media. Here are a series of questions which arise from contemplating the choice which we make as media nomads to employ more than one medium to satisfy our aesthetic. Chew with tongue in cheek.
* What do we mean when we use the word 'medium'?
Does a medium consist of the set of tools we use to create with?
Does it consist of the type of venue we choose to display our creation?
* Is there such a thing as a medium without content, or content without a medium, or are they inseparable?
* Is, as Marshal McLuhan proposed, "the medium the message", or do messages demand suitable mediums?
Do certain mediums inherently limit the artistic expression of certain concepts?
Do certain messages demand certain mediums?
Do different mediums have qualitatively different capacities for expression?, or can different media express the same idea?
Can a message create a medium?
* How is an audience affected differently by different media?
Do different media attract qualitatively different kinds of audiences, and how might that shape an artist's choice of medium?
Do different media attract quantitatively different amounts of cash, and how might that shape an artists choice of medium?
* To what extent do technological innovations, the development of new mediums, shape an artist's content?
Can an aesthetic will influence the trajectory of technological innovation?
Can messages/content pioneer the creation of new mediums?
Can messages precede mediums?
